Costa Rica has become increasingly popular as a vacation destination. Also on the rise in the activities list is canopy tours. With many choices available to choose from it’s a thrill for both young and old. If you go home without trying your hand at zip lining, you will surely regret it.

With a variety of tour companies to choose from, you need to do your research to make sure you book your canopy tour that will provide you with the adventure you are in search of. If it is adventure you’re looking for, this is where you will find it. Once is definitely not enough!

Depending on what your extreme adventure idea is, you can bet that you will find it on a canopy tour. With a range of activities outlined along the way, you get to choose what works best for your perfect adrenaline rush! Choose your tour operator according to your “extreme”, or not, desire.

Canopy tours consist of a series of platforms and cables placed strategically throughout the forest. As you travel from platform to platform, you will be connected to the cable with a harness and pulley. Some tour companies offer safety connections while you are standing on the platform waiting to move to through to the next location.

You job on this amazing adventure is to just relax and enjoy the ride. The hardest part about this experience will be deciding which canopy company to choose from. Age and weight restrictions do vary slightly from company to company so it’s best to check prior to booking.

Prices range from about $40.00 U.S. and up depending on which tour company you choose. There are canopy tours in Herradura, which is on the Central Pacific coast, close to Jaco beach. This incredible spot offers spectacular views of the gulf of Nicoya and Pacific Ocean as you are soaring through the sky.

Between Ocotal beach and Flamingo, there is a great tour company called Congo Trail Canopy Tour. If it is eco-friendly tours you are looking for there is a theme park oriented tour that offers first-class day adventures to the rain forest. There are tours that are more famous like the rain forest aerial tram, Tropical Park or horseback riding tours and many more.

If you plan on visiting the Monteverde or Santa Elena Cloud Forest, you will have an opportunity to experience the birds view on things. They do have suspension bridges for your amazing views from the treetops. Just enjoy a nice leisurely walk along the treetops taking in the beautiful views of the forest below.

As with any vacation, it’s best to always be prepared. When visiting Costa Rica remember that we are very close to the equator here and it’s best to bring lots of sunscreen. Bug spray is also suggested, you are experiencing a different climate and precautions are always suggested. Make this vacation an adventure in this beautiful scenic country, and enjoy!

Learning to speak Spanish is difficult at best. A wonderful way to learn a new language is through a Student Immersion program. Spanish Immersion programs in Costa Rica are not only culturally enlightening, they creates an environment where students are interacting with the locals, learning about the culture, and enjoying an amazing experience to travel within another country and speaking the language they are studying.

There are many activities for your students to do while visiting Costa Rica for their Spanish immersion course. There are volunteer projects they can work on with the locals. With many biologist already based here for their studies, they are always looking for student volunteers to help with their projects.

While working in the immersion program here in Costa Rica, you will leave with a host family. This creates an environment where you experience not only the culture, but you are getting to practice your Spanish daily. What better way to learn, eating, drinking and speaking Spanish? These families are incredibly hospitable, warm and caring which is typical of the Costa Rican culture.

While visiting in Costa Rica, your students will find many activities that will be on the “must do” list. From the Monteverde Reserve, to the beautiful beaches each place has its own attractions. And don’t forget the wildlife, everywhere you look, everyplace you visit, it’s all around you and the best thing is they are living in their natural habitat.

Costa Rica is known for its vast geographical diversity. This among other things brings all types of people to Costa Rica. While they are here, they will meet farmers who still grow their own coffee, sugar can in addition to other products they in turn sell to support their families.

Another amazing spot in Costa Rica is Manual Antonio National Park. This preserved part of the beach has beautiful white sandy beaches and an abundance of tropical forest. Inside the park and along the beach, you will be amazed at the sight of wildlife including monkeys, birds to name a few, running free in their natural habitat.

Some of the activities available while at the beach are horseback riding as well as a hike through Manuel Antonio National Park. Relaxing on the beach or a little rafting before you leave is always a good way to spend your time in Manuel Antonio. Adventure is what this location is all about.

Students have always been amazed at the Tarcoles River. Crocodiles are in large numbers and close enough to touch (though that might not be a good idea!). This is truly an experience your students will not ever forget.

Spanish Immersion means so much more. It’s about learning about a different culture, learning how to adapt to another persons way of life, and being willing to learn. Spanish will be second language, literally, to your students upon their return to their hometown. Along with an attitude that they too can make a difference in this world, so why not try. This is a lesson that they will carry with them throughout their lifetime.

I recently made good on a promise I had been making to my family for sometime now. We had seen a program on television talking about Costa Rica and all it has to offer and I promised then and there that we would all get to Costa Rica at some point. We are all about nature and wildlife and adventure so since that time, the requests have been relentless. The only obstacle, as is often the case, is time and money.

Costa Rica, as the program described, is a small Central American country encompassing no more than 31,682 square miles. It is known for being peaceful and even gained a Nobel Peace prize for its efforts in brokering a peace accord in neighboring Central American countries where conflict existed. Over 12% of its land is protected and it is considered to have one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on the planet.

Monteverde was to be our first destination on our itinerary. Green Mountain as it were, was settled by a group of Quakers who arrived to the area around 1951. They were attracted to Costa Rica after the abolition of its army and choose the area that would become Monteverde because it seemed conducive to the diary farming that was their trade. After scientists realized the significance of the delicate micro-system of its surrounding cloud forests, they began to protect the nearby forests.

The road to Monteverde is, for many, the first adventure of their time there. For us, it was no exception. It is a rugged, unpaved road with dramatic drop offs and equally dramatic vistas of the gulf of Nicoya in the distance. The sunset, was one of the most breathtaking I have ever seen.

The plan was to spend our first morning ziplining at a place called Selvatura. After awakening to a symphony of nature just outside our cabin we ate breakfast and drank fresh Costa Rican coffee as we waited for the shuttle to pick us. We choose Selvatura for our zipline experience ironically, because they offer so much more. They host an unparalleled bridge system through the forest canopy, a magnificent butterfly garden the most extensive insect museum in the country probably more I am not aware of.

Our dream for sometime had been the zipline canopy tours and that was to be our first adventure. The sensation of flying through the forest canopy suspended by nothing more than a steel cable was exhilarating beyond words! Fortunately, because of the way it was built, it also felt totally safe for my kids to do as well.

We enjoyed much more of what Monteverde had to offer including horseback rides to see the active, Arenal volcano, hikes through the cloud forest reserve and much more. After departing Monteverde we went on to explore other parts of Costa Rica. We journeyed on to the southern region of the country with its lush tropical rainforests and remote beaches and later to the Caribbean with its unique flavor and style.

Our flight departed Costa Rica and we headed back to our home. Home is always a nice place to be headed towards. Even better, we decided when bringing with you all the wonderful memories we were sure to hold so dear.

January 17 was once again a memorable day for Uncle Sam’s List as they entered into yet another business partnership. This time, Uncle Sam has joined up with Naima restaurant for the sake of providing guests with a shelter while they eagerly await VIP nightclub admission. Uncle Sam’s took this initiative after it was established that Uncle Sam’s list attracted almost three thousand visitors to the New York Mansion Nightclub. Essentially, this makes Uncle Sam’s List one of the top ranking guest lists in the city.

It was not by coincidence that Uncle Sam chose Nama’s Restaurant. To the contrary, the owners came from an isle called Capri, just off the Almalfi coast, an area of which Uncle Sam has fond memories. During a stint in the military, Sam had traveled to the region and in so doing; he took a special liking to South Italian food.

It was during the time Sam was originally starting to develop his tours that he stumbled upon this genuine South Italian restaurant. Recently, Sam has negotiated a deal with the owners, which will in turn ensures that any guests of Uncle Sam get drinks at discounted prices while waiting for VIP nightclub admission.

While the average pundit either needs to get to a party early, or hang around outside in the cold until the party gets into swing, those who are customers of Uncle Sam’s List have the honor of enjoying discounted drinks at Nama’s Restaurant, while at the same time they can enjoy authentic south Italian cuisine and once the party going, there’ll be no queues to join.

The best time to arrive at any party is when it’s already in full swing and this is exactly what Uncle Sam’s List does. Customers relax with great tasting food and cheap drinks at Nama’s and then once the party is heaving, admission is flawless, with no queue to stand in and no cold weather to face.

In order to provide a flawless experience, guests of Uncle Sam’s List have to comply with a relatively strict dress code which includes no tennis shoes, no hats, and all chains to be out of view. However, this is to the advantage of guests as ladies are granted free admission and men get discounted admission.

In addition to the requirement for dressing accordingly for admission into the top clubs, Uncle Sam recommends all RSVP’s to email Uncle Sam’s List at www.unclesamslist.com in order to confirm access to his service.

No children’s book series has caught the imagination quite like Harry Potter. The stories have launched an industry in merchandise, games and movies. Fans like to see where the films were shot and several Harry Potter Tours organise guided visits to locations where memorable scenes from the books were brought to the screen. Many famous British landmarks and institutions have played a part in the filming. The challenge for the filmmakers was to find the right location to stand in for the fictitious places of the wizard world.

The British Tours Company runs various tours, offering different durations and permutations. The Oxford and Gloucester Tour takes in some splendid sights and is an interesting history lesson. The prestigious Oxford University was used for many scenes at Hogwarts School, its magnificent architecture of cloisters and archways being perfect for the job. Staircases in the University were featured along with the Great Hall, which was the inspiration for Hogwart’s Dining Room. The University Library served as Hogwart’s Hospital Infirmary.

The Gloucester part of the Harry Potter Tour includes the wonderful Norman Cathedral, which was used in scenes involving ghosts and talking portraits in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first in the series. The Moaning Myrtle scenes in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and scenes from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were also shot in Gloucester Cathedral.

London can also be added to the itinerary, which gives the opportunity of standing on the very platform at Kings Cross railway station that represented Platform 9 3/4 in the movies. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Westminster Tube Station is the location for the Ministry of Magic. The Harry Potter Tour also goes to the Victorian built Leadenhall Market, where Harry and Hagrid made their way to the Leaky Cauldron pub. The itinerary also includes London Zoo, where Harry had his encounter with the snake in the first film. There is an alternative trip to the British Museum to see the Lewis Chessman display. This was the chess set that was copied for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Other London tourist attractions can be added, such as Piccadilly Circus, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, St.Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament.

The London Taxi Tours are a comfortable way of exploring the capital with different themes. The driver guides give informative tours for James Bond, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Monopoly Board Game, and Harry Potter Tours. There is a separate tour for Lacock village and Abbey, the location for scenes in the first two films. The beautiful Abbey dates from 1232 and the medieval cloisters, monastic rooms, classrooms and grassed courtyard can all be seen on screen. The village is 16th century and is the location for Privet Drive, home of the Dursley family. The village is also used for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and for Professor Slughorn’s house. London and Oxford can be added to this Harry Potter Tour.

Hiking is an activity that requires you to be on your feet the entire time and foot comfort and health is not just about the right hiking boot.

by Leroy Calstard

Hiking is an activity that requires you to be on your feet the entire time and foot comfort and health is not just about the right hiking boot. You also need to have proper hiking socks. Yes, there is a difference between sport socks and hiking socks – and it’s not aesthetics.

First off, good hiking socks will be thick, sturdy and comfortable to the touch. They will also be longer than most socks; they go beyond the top of your hiking boot. The toe, ankle bone and heel will be extra thick since these parts of the sock get the most wear when hiking. These areas should me smooth and ridge-free since there will be a lot of friction in these places and your foot can develop blisters.

Good hiking socks are made of cotton or wool and usually blended with synthetic fibers. The natural materials will provide warmth in cold weather and allow your feet to “breath” in hot weather. Wicking is also important; wicking means it allows for your sweat to evaporate so moisture is not retained. Preventing moisture is very important since it can cause blisters, chafing and fungal infections.

One hundred percent natural is not the best way to go with hiking socks. Synthetic material is usually blended with natural fibers for another reason – elasticity. You will want your socks to stay up and not slip into your boot and then under your foot. This is not only annoying but can lead to blisters and sores. Check the material label; the amount of Lycra or Nylon is usually 10 to 25 percent.

Don’t trade quality for price since you usually get what you pay for. Hiking socks will usually cost upwards of 15 dollars. You should hike with an extra pair if you’ll be camping or hiking in snow or through wet areas since it’s important to keep your feet as dry as possible. There are different hiking socks for varying climates so invest in a few different kinds if you’re an avid hiker.

As a good resource, ask fellow hikers what socks have worked well for them and which brands have not. You can also search the internet for reviews from hikers; make sure the reviews are not endorsed by a certain company or brand. There will be some trial and error since what works well for one make not work as well for you. Don’t think twice about throwing away a pair of socks that don’t work for you.

One of the major concerns among ecotourism proponents is the diversity of definitions and policies guiding the industry. There is an ecotourism policy that is intended to be the sole outline for future action, but there is variety in the way this guideline is implemented. There are also several distinct policies applied to the organization and promotion of the field.

While the primary policy focuses on promoting environmental awareness by allowing travelers to get a close look at nature and unique cultures, other plans and guidelines focus more on monetary benefits for separate organizations. As one example, those who follow the teachings of yoga may hold classes in a remote forest area as part of a tour, charging a fee that covers expenses and provides the instructors. In an ideal world, all the revenue would go to the preservation of the natural resources at the chosen location.

While the basic idea is good, some who have been active in ecotourism from the beginning are concerned that the industry is so loosely organized under a variety of plans. The environment has already been damaged in a significant way by the actions of human beings, and ecotourism proponents feel that it is up to us to preserve and restore for future generations. Unfortunately, people tend to take the environment for granted, even within the field of ecotourism. While the organizers of a travel package may have the best intentions at the start, reality can step in and cause the plan to move in an undesired direction.

Perhaps the best way to understand the issue of policy varieties is to look at an example or two. Those who want to be involved in ecotourism in a positive way might consider this an exploring trip that will benefit the movement in the long run.

One of the more well-known ecotourism sites in the United States is Yosemite National Park. In this California park, people walk the inviting trails and experience, with awe, the natural wonders called geysers. Some of the natural formations and attractions in Yosemite are unique, serving the purpose of both tourism and showing visitors how rare unspoiled nature can be. In many cases, visitors leave the park with a new commitment to preserving natural resources for the future.

In contrast, there are events and activities in the ecotourism field that are not part of a fee-based system. People can have a positive effect on the environment and on the growth of ecotourism simply by not littering. Many people do not want to make the effort to find a proper wastebasket and drop their trash on the ground. Ecotourism activities might include an education session about the long-term effects of litter on human beings, animal life and plant life.

The obvious differences between these two types of ecotourism activities are indications of how the industry can be guided by varying policies. Some in the field believe that these differences can be addressed through careful discussion, over time. But the economic benefits of a growing industry sometimes push people to throw caution aside in favor of additional revenue.

More information is available about the various policies that are guiding ecotourism. Several official Web sites attempt to define what these policies are and how they affect the general concept of ecotourism.

A backpack is for all seasons and for all activities. Before you hit the market to buy a backpack, keep in mind several things that you may consider for your final decision. Some of the factors that you should look upon are the design, the price, the material used, the size, or perhaps the brand name.

If hiking is your style, then go for a backpack, that can store all your hiking treks. Make sure that the backpack can protect your gear in adverse environment conditions. Most hiking backpacks come with a top closing flap that prevents water from dripping inside while hiking in rainy conditions. An ideal backpack will feature an extendable top portion, so that you can increase the amount of gear and equipment to carry along. A backpack should have more than one compartment so that you can keep items separately.Lastly, make sure that the backpack has straps to carry along a sleeping bag.

Travel backpacks are available if you’re doing a lot of traveling and like to carry your items with you in one smooth packing device. Look for a backpack that has a pack that can be removed for you to take along on smaller excursions during your travel plans so that you don’t have to take along the entire pack. When you’re packing a travel backpack you’ll be storing your items as though you were using a suitcase however, the end result is the functionality of a backpack.

Day backpack is ideal for smaller trips with all the benefits of a larger backpack. The straps should be adjustable so that you can make changes depending on the items you want to carry along. It’s not necessary to have different compartments for your gear, but if you do have the option then it’s a boon.

Backpack prices vary a lot; the larger the size the more you end up paying. You can choose from different brand names with steep prices. Well, it doesn’t matter much who the manufacturer is, it’s the guarantee that counts. Ideally both the material and the way the pack is built should be under a warranty. Shop and surf till the time you get one with such service and facility.
