If you have got to the point, where you really want to become a pilot then no doubt flying is a passion of yours. Once the decision to become a pilot has been made you then need to put some serious consideration into what type of pilot you want to be and start your research into the requirements. . Now in order to make the right choice you have to determine your ultimate goal. The nine categories of classifications starting from the most advanced are?

- Designated pilot examiner – Airline transport – Certified flight instructor – Commercial – Instrument rated – Private – Recreational – Sport – Student

Naturally, to begin your quest you have to start at the bottom, and then you can decide what level you will carry onto.

To reach any of these levels they all have one thing in common which is a completion of a specific amount of hours, in theory, written tests, oral examinations and ultimately the flight test. It seems like a lot of work and it most definitely is. The rewards you reap from your diligence are a permanent ownership of your certificate unless you allow it to expire or it becomes suspended or revoked. You must keep in current by flying a specified number of hours per year and maintain a valid medical certificate.

Everything you are taught in your flight training must adhere to the FAA rules and regulations. Now let us start at the bottom of the ladder and work our way through the various pilot levels. You may then have a better understanding as to what your goals will be.

Student: Prior to age of 16 you can learn the basics and fly under the guidance of a certified instructor. Once you have become 16 and have the required medical certificate you can move onto your first fly alone, or solo as it is called. That of course is depended on your having mastered the basic skills and knowledge of the flight topics. You will be required to remain close to your home base but you may be allowed to practice your cross country to various local airports. Weather restrictions will be in place as well. You are still not qualified to carry passengers or receive remuneration as a pilot.

Sport Pilot: In most cases you are not required to be medically certified as you are only allowed to fly low speed aircraft which is categorized as less than 100mph.They are required to have a valid drivers license be 17 years of age or older and a completion of 20 hours flight time which is made up of 15 hours training combined with 5 hours solo flight training. You will have limitations imposed upon you such as..

- Restricted from operating at airports that require ATC communication – No flying after dark – Maximum of one passenger

In addition to this, you must renew your certificate every two years by way of a flight review with a certified flight instructor.

Recreational Pilots: Just as the title implies are individuals who fly for entertainment purpose. To qualify for this category you must be a minimum of 17 years of age, possess about 40 logged flight hours which includes no less than 15 hour flight instruction. These pilots must possess a Class III medical certificate that has to be renewed anywhere between 24 to 36 months. The pilot?s age dictates the renewal regulation? A CFI flight review is mandatory every two years in order to maintain the license in good standing.

There are also restrictions applicable to this pilot category such as?

The authority to fly a max distance of 58 miles from the airport they have received their instruction at. This restriction can be waived if the pilot has had the acceptable cross-country training.

- One passenger restriction – Non-enumeration – Daytime flying only – No charity flights – No flying duties connected with business or employment – Acceptable airplanes are only single engine with fixed landing gear. The engine cannot accept’0hp and there must be no more than four seating availability. – Flying where ATC is a requirement is not allowed, unless they have received the acquired training in this area.

Once you have reached this point you now need to consider if you want to continue moving up the ladder.

Want to learn to fly? FAA and JAA certified instructor reveals the goldmine of private pilot manual and video training previously only available to atp flight school.

The Cape Peninsula is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the world. The peninsula is defined by its magnificent mountainous range and is located in the dazzlingly isolated southern Atlantic.

The 11 Languages of South Africa?s Strong Identity South Africa has a unique colonial history that carries over to the present day, and sets it apart from the rest of Africa. Travelers to South Africa are often drawn to the interesting multicultural nature of a modern country that still confronts racial issues from its past head on. Dutch sailors and settlers occupied the country for a large part of the 17th and 18th centuries. They imported slaves from India, Madagascar, and Indonesia to make up for a shortage of skilled labor.

The Peninsula?s splendor is best experienced by taking one of two very different coastal drives to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. One, the popular Chapman?s Peak is on the west. The route extends from the cosmopolitan seaboard of Sea Point through the renowned and naturally beautiful beaches of Clifton, passing the peaceful and rustic Hout Bay, driving close to the cliffs on Chapman?s Peak Drive and on toward the Noordhork?s Long Beach?s white length. The other, False Bay road is northward, and close to the mountains, crawling past the popular family beach, Fish Hoek, to Kalb Bay, a fish village noted for its colorful and unique location, and onto Muizenburg, famous for its secure swimming and great surf.

One other site to visit would be the City Bowl. Inside the City Bowl, life often centers on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a pulsating waterfront Mecca. This Waterfront is a historical site and working harbor that can offer hours of entertainment including shopping malls, arts and crafts markets, theaters and live music, and even entertainment showpieces including the Telkom Exploratorium and the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Wetlands, Whales, and Wine It has become much easier to enjoy the spectacular sights of South Africa since the end of apartheid. From the bustling city of Cape Town, visitors can hike the iconic Table Mountain National Park, and see the plateau?s top covered by an eerie layer of clouds. Visitors can also travel west to the Shipwreck Coast of the Cape of Good Hope and view a graveyard of ill-fated naval expeditions, whose well preserved remains add character to the stunning coastline. The abundance of whales is also a signature feature of South Africa?s coastline. Travelers can spend an afternoon in the Oceanside town of Hermanus, renowned for it its whale watching, or take a charter boat trip to catch a closer sight of the majestic creatures. A popular trip from Hermanus is the Garden Route, which winds through hidden nature reserves, remote coastal towns, national monuments, indigenous forests, and sea caves, and borders the peaceful desert highlands of the Karoo.

There are many museums and art galleries available. The Castle of Good Hope is located in the center of the city. Bo-Kaap cobbled streets are lined with charming old buildings. In contrast to the ancient buildings is South Africa?s first mosque. It also contrasts culturally with the country?s oldest homestead and wine farm located in the Cape, Groot Constantia. Historically, The Groot Constantia is linked on the Constantia wine route to the estates of Helderberg and Durbanville. The hills of Table Mountain or Lion?s Head, located only a short trip from the entertainment of Century City offer multiple areas to walk and climb.

Yet another local city, Century City, offers theme parks, malls, cineplexes, and entertainment centers. For a more colorful and relaxing contrast, one can choose from a myriad of walks and climbs to view both local fauna and flora. These walks include up Table Mountain, through the Silvermine or Tyberberg Nature Reserves, through the Newlands Forest, through the Cape of Good Hope or Helderberg Nature Reserves, or one of the smaller inner-city wildlife habitats.

Thailand’s largest and arguably most popular island, Phuket, lies in the Andaman Sea, off the west coast of southern Thailand, and is a province in its own right. In December 2004 the island was devastated by the tsunami that hit so much of Asia, and many coastal resorts and villages suffered terribly.

Fortunately, Phuket is a wealthy province, and today, thanks to a major re-building programme, the island is back in business, and visitors are unlikely to see any noticeable damage.

Phuket is largely mountainous, its highest point being Mai Thao Sip Song at 529 m (1,745 ft), and much of it is forested. From the 16th century until relatively recently, tin mining was important to the economy, and the culture of the Chinese workers has informed that of Phuket.

Other influences include Portuguese and Islam. Some 35 per cent of the population are Muslims. Phuket has been known as a holiday island since the 1980s, and its beaches sprout new resorts, restaurants and dive operations with every passing year.

Most of the best beaches, huge swathes of white sand, or little sheltered coves, are on the west coast, but those towards the northern tip are much less visited. Patong, the most popular, is very highly developed, and Phuket City is awash with tourists shopping and partying the night away.

The island’s interior is worth exploring, with rubber plantations, rice fields and fruit groves providing employment for islanders who live traditionally, a world away from the international tourism scene.

Khan Phra Thaeo National Park, just 20 kin (12.5 mi) from Phuket City, is a must. Its hills and valleys are covered with tropical rainforest, and it contains a Lar gibbon rehabilitation centre. These charming creatures are endangered, and this project is important to their survival.

Situated on the north-western coast of the Malay Peninsula at the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, Penang Island covers an area of 292 sq km (112 sq mi). The island is separated from mainland Malaysia by a channel of sea varying between 3 km (1.9 mi) and 13 km (8 mi) wide, and they are linked by the 13.5 km (8.4 mi) Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world.

The island has the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, which was founded by Captain Francis Light in 1786 while he was searching for a docking place for ships of the East India Company. Captain Light made a treaty with the Sultan of Kedah who gave him permission to colonize the sparsely populated island.

Penang today is a fine mixture of old and new: bustling, industrial port meets historic Old Town. In the capital, Georgetown, modem skyscrapers tower above one of the largest collections of pre-war buildings in south-east Asia. Colourful produce markets compete for space with high-tech electronics manufacturers. There is also a fascinating mixture of cultures here. Hundred year old churches, Chinese temples, Indian temples and mosques stand side by side.

In the middle of the bustling modern city is Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera), at almost 900 m (2,953 ft) high, with its cool, clean air. From its summit there are amazing views of the town, the island, and even the mountains on the mainland when the sky is clear. There is a Swiss-built funicular railway to take visitors to the summit, which creaks its way up through the beautiful tropical forest. At the top of the hill there is a cafe, a Hindu temple and a mosque.

If you want to escape the busy city, there are other attractions on the island, including plenty of lovely beaches, some quaint fishing villages, beautiful stretches of forest and cascading waterfalls. Among the less crowded beaches are Muka Head, Pantai Keracut, Monkey Beach, Pantai Acheh and Gertak Sanggul.

Penang Island is enriched by its numerous ethnic communities, among them Malays, Chinese and Indians, which live side by side in harmony to create a multi-faceted culture. Each community maintains its cultural identity through religious festivals and cultural shows, including angsawan, Boria, flag processions, the Chingay Parade, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, the Hungry Ghosts Festival and Thaipusam. This succession of colourful festivals unravels throughout the year and when one big celebration is finished, another begins.

Known to the Ancient Egyptians as Abu or Yabu, meaning elephant, Elephantine Island is a truly ancient site resting as it does at the First Cataract of the Nile, and creating a natural boundary between Egypt and Nubia.

Being the largest island at Aswan, it was easily defensible and at one time was thought to be a major ivory trading center, possibly giving rise to its name. But rumor has it the name may also arise from the elephant-shaped granite boulders lying around its shores.

It is said that Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, lived in caves beneath the island and controlled the waters of the Nile. Nowadays, the southern tip of the island holds the ruins of the Temple of Khnurn, which was rebuilt in the 30th dynasty. Up until 1822, there were also temples to Thutmose III and Amenhotep III here, but the Ottoman government in their wisdom destroyed them.

Elephantine is an exquisite island, steeped in ancient history and blessed with significant artifacts. Transported instantly back in time, you wander under banana trees and date palms through colorful Nubian villages with narrow, dusty alleyways and mud houses painted or carved with crocodiles and fish.

On the edge of the island is one of the oldest Nilometers in Egypt. It is a stone `yardstick’ used to measure the height of the River Nile. It was last reconstructed in Roman times and was still in use as late as the 19th century.

Its 90 steps, leading down to the river, are marked with Hindu-Arabic, Roman and hieroglyphic numerals, and inscriptions carved deep into the rock during the 17th century can be seen at the water’s edge.

Elephantine Island is a green, flower-festooned oasis of calm lapped by the turquoise waters of the Nile and clinging quietly to its exotic past.

Traveling is now an affordable luxury that people of all backgrounds can enjoy. For those who are traveling on a budget, you can save money if you are willing to do a little bit of research. The cost of airfares fluctuates constantly and there are many changing factors that can affect the price of a fare. If you are willing to consider several dates, times, and locations, you can potentially save a lot of money on a fun and fabulous trip.

Buying tickets in advance will just about always result in much lower fare prices than buying closer to the time of travel. The earlier you can find, reserve and purchase your ticket, the more money you will save on your air travel. Traveling on certain days of the week is a great way to save money, with savings for staying over a Monday or a weekend being typical discounts with many airlines. Airlines often have flights booked through the middle of the week, so they will offer weekend travelers discounts. These discounts differ from one airline to another, including possible requirements for staying over certain days, so check carefully with each one that offers flights to your chosen destination.

Another great way to get cheap flights is to fly on standby, although this requires more flexibility in your departure times. If you have some flexibility in your destination also, then you can save even more for waiting the extra time and most airlines offer standby tickets.

Remember that you will pay a premium for small details such as precise dates in regards to arrival or departure. By expanding the dates that you are willing to fly, the airfare can vary greatly. Similarly, if time is not a big factor for you, then long layovers and overnight flights are another way to save money. The more requirements that you have, the less money that you will save.

As you are looking for your flight, try to avoid specifying times, as this may drive up the cost of the ticket. Sometimes the cheapest flights are at odd times of the day, such as 6 AM or 3 PM. Again, the more requirements that you specify, the more expensive the ticket will be.

Online fare comparison tools offer the best way to compare prices and make sure you get the cheapest ticket prices. As you make your travel plans, just use the travel sites online to make sure you always get the cheapest fare prices. Competition between airlines will sometimes produce the best rates, so look for airfare wars when you can save hundreds of dollars by finding the airline that wants your business the most.

While it may be relatively impossible to figure out the cheapest flight at any given moment to anywhere in the world, there are definitely tools that can helpful for saving money. If you think of this as a project and are willing to invest some time, it can potentially save you a lot of money that you can spend on your vacation instead. Ultimately, having some flexibility is the best way to save some money and understanding how airlines discount their airfares will help you be a smart and savvy traveler who knows how to save money.

Iceland is a mountainous island in the North Atlantic, located between Europe and North America. Although a bit austere, Iceland is a country of unreserved natural splendor. The almost unreal beauty of lava eruptions, hot springs, geysers, fissures and glaciers make this land truly unique. Nordic and Celtic people settled Iceland in the 9th century, and in fact, Ing?lfur Arnarson, a Norwegian Viking, founded the first settlement on the site known as present day Reykjavik, which is Iceland?s capital city.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is one of the most famous attractions for tourists. Although it is thought these lights are only visible in winter, the truth is they can be seen all year long. Another of Iceland?s attraction is the Midnight Sun. When this occurs in Scandinavia, during early summer months, the sun is visible at midnight. Its opposite is called the Polar Night, and occurs during the winter months.

At some point in your vacation, you will most likely spend some time in Reykjavik City, Iceland?s capital. It is one of the cleanest, greenest cities in the world, and the nightlife is vibrant. The variety of pubs, bars, cafes and dance halls is endless, and live music is becoming a trademark. In fact, there is at least one concert on any given night. The assortment of local craft shops and Scandinavian designer stores making shopping an adventure, as does the Kringlan shopping mall.

Of course, if you come to Iceland, you simply must try a whale-watching tour. A natural habitat for whales, dolphins and seals, the ocean surrounding Reykjavik is ideal for catching a glimpse. Tours will generally pass by Puffin Island, too. Built in 1988, and considered to be Reykjavik?s landmark, the Perlan, or Pearl, is located under a large glass dome. This dome sits atop huge tanks, which are used to store the natural hot water for heating the city, and houses a rotating restaurant. The cuisine is divine, and the views spectacular.

If you are into Viking history, you simply have to investigate some of Reykjavik?s museums. The Sun Voyager is another stop you will want to make. It is a massive steel sculpture of a Viking ship, created by Jon Gunnar Arnason, and it is found on Mt, Esja. Make sure to view it at sunrise or sunset. Also, make the time to stop at the Restaurant Fjorugardurinn. Set up in Viking fashion and offering a customary Viking feast, this distinctive restaurant lets you to step back in time and experience some memorable Viking culture.

If you have the time, don?t miss another of Iceland?s top tourist attractions, The Blue Lagoon. This outdoor, geothermal seawater pool, can be found about 45-minutes from Reykjavik, and is worth a trip. The steam-covered, fluorescent blue pool is 104-degrees all year long.

This amazing country offers tourists a wide variety of unique experiences, and all of them delight and awe. Dramatic, striking, and eerily austere, a trip to Iceland is truly memorable.

We all love to take time to get away from the stresses of life to enjoy a vacation. Many people think that if they have a baby or very young children, they can no longer take a vacation. Traveling with babies can be made much easier by planning and implementing measures that will make your vacation fun and relaxing.

A Last Escape Before Baby Makes Three

Vacationing when pregnant, or the babymoon, is a great way to enjoy the remaining time of life as a couple. Many couples decide to book a getaway to celebrate, relax and enjoy their last diaper-free break for a while. The best time to travel while pregnant is during the second trimester, weeks 14 to 27. By then, morning sickness should have abated, energy levels should be higher and you should be feeling “blooming”. After that, while Canadian airlines will accept you for travel right up to the final weeks of your pregnancy, there’s a good chance that you’ll be keener to rest more than travel. Plus, there’s a greater chance of premature labor in the final weeks.

When to Go: You’ll want heat, but not too much heat, lots of comfort, good food and relaxation. Stick to familiar vacation spots – you’ll need to feel confident that the food and environs will suit you. This is no time for surprises. Florida and the Caribbean are favoured destinations for a babymoon, but there are plenty of beautiful spots in our own backyard – Vancouver Island, Toronto and Ontario’s West Coast, Quebec City, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia…

What to Wear: Your loosest clothes and lots of layers. Make sure there’s plenty of space in your clothing in case junior undergoes a growth spurt. If you’re visiting a sun spot take a heavy-duty sunscreen – mom-to-be skin can be extra sensitive. Pack too your favorite snacks and over-the-counter medicine. Don’t forget your medical notes – just in case.

Traveling With Babies

Traveling with a baby can help him or her experience new environments and encourages family bonding. The following tips will help you have a better travel experience with your baby.

Location: Make sure you choose an appropriate destination for a baby. Research destinations by using the internet and traveler reviews. Family-orientated travel guides are useful. Babies will not enjoy too much heat or cold.

Enlist Baby Travel Services: There are online baby supply companies who will deliver changing, feeding, and bathing supplies your baby will need while away from home, to any worldwide travel destination. You can shop for all the supplies your baby will need for traveling without leaving your home.

Travel Assistance Insurance: Obtaining travel insurance will ensure that your baby will receive proper medical care in case of an illness or injury. Coverage should include the ability for flights home if treatment is required in the US.

Family Friendly Vacation: There are baby and toddler friendly resorts and hotels that cater to families. Make sure that where you stay has appropriate baby supplies such as a crib and highchair.

Allow Baby to Adjust to New Environment: Maintain a routine with familiar food, toys, and blanket. The baby should not receive too much stimulation within the first couple of days. They should rest and get use to the new environment.

Vacationing with babies can be a fun experience for parents. It is important to remember that it is a vacation, so adults should take time each day to relax. With a little planning and preparation, you and your baby will have a great vacation.

by Maisie J Matthews

A lot of people will be going on holiday this year and it’s usually worth doing some research before you book anything. You could get yourself some great deals on your flights and hotel bookings.

A lot of people tend to just agree with whatever their travel agent says, without doing their own research. It’s always best to do some research online to find out what the best deals are. You could really save yourself quite a lot of money.

It can be hard to understand who has the best deals on the market. However, if you perform a little bit of price comparison with the deals you find then you should be able to save yourself some money which is never a bad thing!

As well as thinking about the prices you’ll have to decide on a destination. This part is usually the easiest because all you have to do is head to a reviews website and read up on what people have been saying about the places you’re interested in.

Once you have chosen a destination you’ll then be able to do some thorough research in to the prices for that area. Most of the time, it’s pretty easy to find what you’re looking for but it can be worth spending a good few hours on your research just to make sure you get it right.

As I said earlier, you will need to do some price comparison to make sure that you get yourself the best deals. The easiest way to do this is to head to a few of the online booking websites and find the flights and holiday deal that you want. Make a note of the price and move onto the next site.

Keep doing this until you have a range of prices available. Once you have chosen your destination and had a look at the prices you should be able to come up with a reasonable budget.

Choosing a budget should be easier now that you have done your research. You’ll have a good idea of what your flights and holiday package will cost you and this can be a real bonus. Just budget according to where you’re heading and the prices you have seen.

After you have settled on a budget, it’s time to head to your local travel agent, armed with the quotes you have found. This is the part that a lot of people fail to do. It’s totally normal to negotiate with your travel agent to see if they can lower their prices.

If you’re comfortable buying online then just select one of the deals you found. However, a lot of people don’t like buying flights online and this is why you need to negotiate with your travel agent.

You should be able to get your travel agent to at least match some of the prices you have found online. Flights and holidays are very cheap at the moment because of the recession. But research can help you find the best deals.

Overall, finding flights for your holiday deal is easy – you just have to know where to look. As long as you do some research and ensure that your travel agent is negotiable then you should be able to save yourself quite a bit of money.

Garajonay National Park on the island of La Gomera offers some of the best hiking in the Canary Islands. Here you won’t find the razzle dazzle of Tenerife but a wonderful oasis of greenery shrouded in a cloak of swirling mist.

La Gomera is shaped like an orange squeezer, with ravines running out from the core of the island. At it’s centre lies the rainforest which rises to a height of about 5000ft. http://reddeparquesnacionales.mma.es/parques/garajonay/index.htm .

Large areas of Europe were covered in this type of rainforest but the effects of climate change, man and pollution has led to its demise. On La Gomera the World Heritage Site status protects it from mans worst endeavours and the main threat comes from fire.

You have to take a car or bus to reach the summit and once the hairpin bends have been successfully negotiated you are rewarded with a wonderful view of Mount Teide some 40 miles way on Tenerife. The top is often shrouded in a tree hugging mist and as you descend into the forest by foot a tangle of green branches beckons.

The further you go the cooler and darker it gets, but the well flattened track is soft underfoot and easy to follow. Sleepy Hollow springs to mind as the fungus covered laurel reaches out. The contrast to the brown, baked, earth that surrounds this oasis is stark. These paths were created many years ago by locals who had to negotiate the forest in order to get from one side of the island to the other.

After an hour or so a stream is reached and the chance to refill empty bottles. The lack of rain makes one wonder where the water comes from but the answer lies in the “horizontal” rain or mist that is soaked up by the forests vegetation.

Eventually a small village appears – could it be a long lost civilisation? Probably not, but the rustic restaurant is a welcome site where delicious local dishes of soup with “Gofio” are on offer.

Finally, make your way along a short tarmac road to a hidden tunnel where your guide will present you with a lighted candle which is absolutely required as you traverse from one valley to the next. A truly unforgettable experience.
