Difference Between Fixed and Comprehensive Medical Insurance for Visitors Policies

There are two main types of visitor health insurance. These two forms are fixed rate policies and comprehensive policies. Different providers will either offer one or the other, but sometimes they can offer both.

Fixed benefits provide a maximum amount of coverage for each type of medical expense. This means that the policies total limit will not be paid for every type of medical treatment and that each class of medical expense is considered separately.

As an example, if a traveler breaks their arm while abroad, the patient has to pay the difference between the fixed limit per occurrence and the actual medical bill. Fixed benefits typically provide sufficient coverage for those not expecting multiple incidents. However, if multiple injuries or illnesses happen on the same trip, the fixed plan may not cover all expenses of the traveler.

Fixed rate policies work best for frugal shoppers, as the premiums are typically much lower than with other plans. Basic coverage for anyone willing to expose themselves to some amount of risk still provides low-level protections for the traveler.

Any injury is covered by comprehensive health insurance for visitor, up to the policy benefit maximum limit. With this type of policy, multiple accidents or illnesses are covered under the plan until the expenses exceed coverage limits.

To compare the two types of policies, a traveler that acquires an infection on their trip would experience very different out-of-pocket expenses. With the comprehensive visitor insurance, the company would allow using the entire policy benefit amount if necessary toward this one illness. However, a fixed rate policy would limit the coverage to a predetermined amount, leaving the remaining costs up to the traveler.

The big difference between fixed rate and comprehensive visitors medical insurance is the degree of payout. Both styles of coverage have similar policy maximums. It really just depends upon the customer?s preference. The fixed benefits plan you obtain limited coverage at a cheaper price.

The most important thing to remember is that insurance for visitors of any type is absolutely vital for international travelers. Many benefits of health insurance for visitors can be utilized through a comprehensive or fixed rate policy. Some coverage is better than none to prevent financial and physical ruin while travelling abroad.
